All right. Jack Bauer is armed with information. He knows the bottom line IS survival. He understands that the 'endgame' - or cherished future (time-line) can be cut off or bent at critical points along the way. Survival, as a reality or a concept can be optimised or restricted by degrees. He knows that others from their own perspective see this too. Influences can be positioned and deployed in either opportunistic or re-active aspect. Jack desires his own optimized timeline first and formost. He is a bright lad so he knows this will require an optimized habitat and environment at large to bear optimal fruit. Jack has positioned himself strategically within a network of essentially like minded individuals. They too are similarly actualizing from their own perspectives, optimal survival for cherished timelines in an uncertain world. So called friends and so called detractors or even enemies are in fact all functioning with the same basic motives as Jack. He knows this to be the case. Alliances, intrigues, betrayals, occuring with varying degrees of impact and coming from any set of interdependent origins are yet to be contrived. Many as yet un encountered and unseen random factors and timeline variants already lie in wait or await force multipliers or dissonant factors before impacting Jacks timeline. Jack, wise fellow that he is, has established tentative criterion regarding potential threats or opportunities seen or unforseen. These criteria range in a spectrum from focus intensive conservative strategic values to looser, more abstracted and liberal as yet undeveloped and flexible values. Jack, at different intervals revisits and reassesses all of this potential as he knows any good agent should. He has read all the instruction manuals, performed experiments, and daydreamed of possibilities. He updates knowledge of his peers activities regularly. Friendly.neutral, and adversarial. He reads his mail and the morning paper. Checks out the CNN update. and gossips with coleagues. He knows he's being fed what others want him to think and he knows he tends to see and think what HE wants. He is aware of all this enmeshment and often thinks life in this matrix sucks but to avoid it would suck worse. He takes joy where he can find it, but he knows this world can be a cruel place. He longs for the freedom to extract himself from states of suffering but obligations keep him enmeshed. He wonders; Did I swallow the blue or the red pill? Both? How much of this is worth my time? I'd rather be meditating blissfully or playing in astral realms. He sees himself in the mirror and says; Fuck-em if they can't take a joke... Jack died last night at the stroke of midnight. We shall all mourn his loss. But as Jack himself was so fond of saying - Life goes on.
